5 ways to help your team perform better
Teams will only excel if they work and pull together. You lead the team, so what steps can you take to ensure this happens? Read our top five tips for success.
1. Build trust
It is hard to work with people you don't trust. Therefore, the first thing you should do to improve teamwork is to create experiences that allow team members to know each other and bond. It can be as simple as eating lunch together, attending happy hour, or participating in team-building activities. Besides spending time together, allowing your team members to make decisions, and supporting their choices goes a long way in building trust.
2. Delegate responsibilities and authority
When people are unsure about their roles and responsibilities, there can be a lot of tension within the group. Everyone needs to know what they are responsible for so that there is no overlap in assignments. In addition to delegating roles, it is also important to give employees authority along with their responsibility. Having the power to make decisions and solve problems will improve morale and performance.
3. Invest in the career development of each team member
Showing personal interest in the growth and development of all your employees is one of the best ways to cultivate full commitment and engagement. Meet with each member of your team to discover their goals and wants. If you can, provide opportunities for them to develop or advance their careers in their area of interest. Doing this will prove to your employees that their goals are equally as important as the company's goals, further improving morale and job satisfaction.
4. Mediate disputes
Conflict will arise at one point or another, so ensure that you provide detailed instructions on how to remedy issues among team members. Encourage them to talk to the person creating conflict in the group and to give their suggestions on how to solve the problem. While at it, foster a proactive and solution-oriented approach instead of a culture of blame.
5. Recognise and reward
Recognising your group's good performance and rewarding their efforts is a great way to incentivise quality teamwork. A good way to do this is by giving them publicity for their work or issuing small gifts.
