The interview has concluded. You have answered the questions, made a positive impression, and now you wait. For many, this is a passive period of uncertainty, but the time between an interview and a final decision is a critical window of opportunity that is often underutilised by candidates. A well-executed follow-up can reinforce your interest, reiterate your suitability for the role, and ultimately distinguish you from the competition.
The first step in a successful follow-up is the thank-you note. This should not be seen as a mere formality; it is a strategic tool. A professional check-in with your recruiter a few days after your last communication is perfectly acceptable and signals your continued engagement. In both cases, the goal is to demonstrate your continued interest without appearing impatient.
The key is to achieve a balance between being proactive and being patient. Refrain from sending multiple emails or calling repeatedly. Trust in the process.
